Sponsored by the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael
O’Connor Woods is honored to have sponsorship by The Dominican Sisters of San Rafael. Although O’Connor Woods is a separate non-profit corporation with its own Board of Trustees, overall sponsorship and certain key powers are reserved by the Sponsor.
Sponsorship is an on-going relationship whereby the Dominican Sisters influence O’Connor Woods in a way that furthers the missions of both groups. A criteria of on-going sponsorship is that the mission and philosophy of O’Connor Woods must be consonant with the mission of the Dominican Sisters. The canonical stewardship of the Sisters is exercised through Mission Holding Corporation, which retains certain reserved powers. These powers include such decisions as approving our philosophy and mission, key financial approvals, and appointing the President/Chief Executive Officer of O’Connor Woods.
The Board Trustees of O’Connor Woods, which holds the assets and liabilities of the organization, is charged with conducting the activities and affairs of O’Connor Woods. The Board assumes responsibility for overall governance, including the mission, financial oversight, strategic planning and development, as well as a review of policies.

Accredited by the Continuing Care Accreditation Commission (CCAC)
O’Connor Woods is proud to have received the Continuing Care Accreditation Commission accreditation. CCAC, the nation’s only accrediting body for retirement communities and aging services continuums, demands that an organization meet Standards of Excellence in three critical areas: governance, financial and strategy; and health and wellness. O’Connor Woods is the only accredited community in San Joaquin County.
Before CCAC was founded, consumers, financial rating agencies, and others had no clear way of determining whether a retirement community was financially stable, providing quality care, or worthy of their investment. In 1985, a group of visionaries created CCAC to help ensure that the nation's retirement communities fulfill their promise of quality and on-going care to older persons. The Continuing Care Accreditation Commission (CCAC) was acquired by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) in 2003, as a means of assuring independence and strength into the future. Today, CARF-CCAC accredits continuing care retirement communities and aging services networks that are part of home, community, or hospital-based systems; sites under a corporate organization; and other types of providers.
We are extremely proud of this prestigious achievement. The accreditation process is perhaps the most effective means of assessing a community’s services, assisting the consumer and is widely regarded as a seal of approval in the retirement industry. Accreditation indicates to the public that we have the financial resources necessary to meet present and projected needs, have knowledgeable administrative staff and provide sufficient financial information to residents and applicants. Accreditation not only signals quality and integrity, but it offers the public a standard for comparison in evaluating retirement living options.

Founded by St. Joseph’s Medical Center
Although no longer affiliated with St. Joseph’s Medical Center, O’Connor Woods was founded by St Joseph’s Regional Health System of Stockton. Today, a relationship still exists, but only in the form of a management agreement. The hospital provides certain management services, including finance, human resources, information technology, and fund development.
Originally a wholly owned subsidiary of the Medical Center, that relationship changed in 1996 when St Joseph’s merged into a larger group of Catholic Hospitals, Catholic Healthcare West. At that time O’Connor Woods became a separate, not-for-profit corporation with sponsorship by the Dominican Sisters.
We are grateful to St. Joseph’s Medical Center for our founding and for our roots. In fact, our name stems from the founder of St Joseph’s Hospital, Father William O’Connor. A local Catholic priest, Father O’Connor founded the hospital in 1899, originally opening as St. Joseph’s Hospital and Home for Old Men to care for gold rush era Stocktonians.
Today, St Joseph’s Medical Center it the largest regional medical center in the county with 294 beds, over 400 physicians and more than 2400 employees. St Joseph’s offers a full range of medical, surgical and diagnostic services.
